Nepal: Holistic and compassionate education at Tashi Waldorf School

News ,  Current news ,  Waldorf worldwide

Since its founding, the Tashi Waldorf School has placed great emphasis on providing a high-quality, holistic, and compassionate education for children from financially and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. It offers an alternative to Nepal’s performance-oriented school system, as well as expensive private schools.

The school, located on the outskirts of Kathmandu, has about 65 students, of whom only around five can afford to pay any school fees. "Many of our students’ families live in poverty," says the school director. "They struggle to put enough food on the table." That’s why the children receive a healthy morning snack and a nutritious lunch at school.

Some children require special support, which they receive not only from the teachers but also from the entire school community. “All the children participate in socially and environmentally friendly activities to support others and the natural world.”

Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries and has faced political instability, earthquakes, floods, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years. Many people lack access to education or vocational training. Some families relied on modest street vending to survive—but this was banned in 2023, worsening their financial situation. Without international donations, Tashi Waldorf School cannot continue its work.
