Since schools in Kenya were forced to close due to the lockdown, teachers have been communicating with the children and with each other via WhatsApp. Since hardly anyone owns a computer, but many do have a smartphone, using this mobile phone app for sending pictures and texts and for video chat was the easiest solution. Not all families have a smartphone themselves, but at least most of them have the opportunity to use one regularly through friends and acquaintances.
An important part of the Rudolf Steiner School Mbagathi is a small school farm. Thanks to the farm the school can cover a large part of the daily need for meals. During the time of school closure, the teachers and gardeners continue to look after the large school garden. But of course the students do not only spend their gardening lessons here, as a beautiful video shows. Thanks to the farm, the children, many of whom do not get enough food at home, receive healthy meals during school hours.
