In 1978 a kindergarten was opened on the outskirts of Rome in Giardino di Cedri. In 1979, a first class was added - as the initiative became only the second Waldorf facility in Italy to do so. The school now includes classes one through eighth. As the school is only recognized but not subsidized by the state, it is entirely funded by parent contributions and donations. Teachers' salaries are correspondingly low. Also, it is not yet possible to build up a high school, due to a lack of space. In fact, even for the existing classes the current premises are much too small. A move to a larger building is not possible for financial reasons. Through the difficult social and economic situation in Italy, the financial difficulties are constantly increasing for many families. Some school parents have become unemployed in recent years and can no longer afford to pay the school fee. Since the school is trying not to reject a child for financial reasons, the financial situation is getting tougher every year and is now downright devastating. Currently, the school is fighting for its economic survival. Any help is appreciated.
